Right-handed pitcher Nate Jones was once primed to be the next White Sox closer, but after a few surgeries the 33-year-old has now been traded to the Rangers.
The White Sox announced the unexpected deal on Wednesday, as Jones is currently on the 60-day injured list after having season-ending forearm surgery in May.
To make the deal enticing, the White Sox are sending the Rangers cash, including $1 million in international bonus money.
Jones, who made his MLB debut in 2012, was the longest tenured member of the White Sox.
